The forecast numbers behind the closure
ADF&G's 2026 Cook Inlet king forecasts came in under escapement goals on every system they published:

Kasilof River
Open for hatchery kings only, 1 May to 15 August, one unbaited single-hook artificial lure. The rules are fiddly and worth reading properly. The Kasilof rules →
Cook Inlet salt, south of Bluff Point
One king per day, 1 April to 15 September. North of Bluff Point is closed 1 May to 15 August.
Homer Spit lagoon & Seldovia
The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon on the Homer Spit and Seldovia waters keep a two-king limit — the only places on the peninsula that do in 2026.

Is Kenai River king salmon fishing open in 2026?
No. Both the early and late runs are closed for the entire 2026 season under emergency orders 2-KS-1-8-26 and 2-KS-1-7-26. The closure includes catch and release, so you cannot legally target Kenai kings at all this year.
Can I catch and release Kenai kings in 2026?
No. Catch-and-release fishing for king salmon is specifically included in both closures. This is stricter than in some earlier restricted seasons, when C&R remained legal.
Why are Kenai kings closed?
The 2026 Cook Inlet forecasts came in below escapement goals across the board. The Kenai early run was forecast at 2,325 large fish against a goal of 2,800 to 5,600, and the late run at 12,718 against a goal of 13,500 to 27,000. ADF&G stated that king salmon are in a period of poor productivity and that escapement goals were not likely to be met in 2026.
Where can I still fish for kings on the Kenai Peninsula?
The Kasilof River is open for hatchery kings under emergency order 2-KS-1-18-26, with strict rules. In salt water, Cook Inlet south of Bluff Point allows one king a day, and the Homer Spit fishing lagoon and Seldovia waters keep a two-king limit.
Will Kenai kings reopen on 16 August 2026?
We do not know, and we will not guess. The late-run closure as published runs to 15 August 2026. Given the forecast shortfall an extension would not be surprising, but no order confirming or denying one had been published when we last checked. Call ADF&G Soldotna on (907) 262-9368 before making plans around it.
